What is Google Lighthouse?

Google Lighthouse is a tool that tests the usability and performance of progressive web apps. In addition to web apps, users can also use the tool to analyze traditional websites’ performance and their optimization potential. Unlike many other analytics tools, Google’s new tool offers the ability to adapt and filter test conditions to get as realistic an assessment as possible of websites’ actual performance metrics.

  • Introduction to Google Lighthouse
  • What is Google Lighthouse capable of specifically?
  • How do you use Google Lighthouse?
  • What can be seen with Lighthouse?

Introduction to Google Lighthouse

Progressive web apps are websites that come close to mobile apps in appearance, functionality, and applicability. Web apps offer dynamic content and are now enjoying great popularity. Examples of progressive web applications are websites like booking.com or Twitter, which have a surprising number of native app features in their browser version.

In order for these progressive web apps, also known as PWAs, to give users the feeling that they are using native apps, PWAs must meet certain parameters and performance characteristics. The Google Lighthouse test measures and optimizes these performance aspects. Lighthouse is open source software and is used primarily via a Chrome extension. Usage is very simple: after installing the extension, you can open any website and test its performance with a click on the extension icon. The evaluation takes place in the form of detailed tables of the measured values and graphical representations.

Google Lighthouse analyzes and compares the following areas: PWA, Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices, and SEO. You can get detailed information on each of the analysis areas mentioned. After the analysis, the tool also provides suggestions for improvement.

Lighthouse is highly flexible and offers various valuable analysis and comparison insights that you can use to optimize your website. Thanks to the freedom of configuration, it is possible to represent every conceivable scenario for analysis. The tool is suitable for beginners, experts, and professionals. Professionals and developers usually use Lighthouse not with the Chrome extension but with the command-line tool, which allows for more customization. However, the command line requires that node.js be pre-installed on the webserver.

What is Google Lighthouse capable of specifically?

Lighthouse checks websites in five different categories.

Progressive web app

Advanced web app analytics is the core feature of Google Lighthouse and has been available since its release. The software analyzes whether the website is working as expected. Specifically, Lighthouse checks whether all dynamic content and elements are displayed correctly, that the website registers a service worker, or that offline functionality is available. A service person is a script that is performed to make website information accessible even offline. For this purpose, a proxy interface is usually created between the website and the user.

Performance

As part of the performance, Lighthouse analyzes the website’s speed or web app and verifies the correct presentation of the elements loaded for the user. The analysis includes the following six sub-categories:

  • First Contentful Paint: indicates how long it takes for the first image or first text to be displayed in full on the site.
  • First Meaningful Paint: Indicates when the main content of the website is fully visible.
  • Speed Index: recommended the speed at which the web page contents are displayed.
  • Time To Interactive: indicates when the page is loaded in order to be fully interactive.
  • First CPU Idle: Indicates when the web page main thread activity is low enough for the first time to process user input.
  • Estimated Input Latency: Estimates how many milliseconds the page or web app will respond to user input during the five-second window with the highest load on page creation. If the latency is greater than 50 milliseconds, users often find the page or app slow.

In addition to analyzing the factors mentioned above, Lighthouse also offers suggestions for improvement. These proposals provide versatile optimization options to reduce loading times. These include, for example, the compression of images, JavaScript, or the closing of resources that could block the rendering of web pages. All other performance analyzes also include recommendations on the following points:

  • Keep image files in formats that take up little storage space and save them in the correct size.
  • If possible, use compressed texts and JavaScript.
  • Optimize the cache for a better presentation of static content
  • Avoid redirects and load the essential requests early on to allow for low server response times.
  • If possible, provide animated content in modern, space-saving video formats.
  • Keep website data volumes as low as possible.
  • Use markup and tags sensibly to improve measurement and tracking results.

Accessibility

In the context of accessibility, Google Lighthouse checks whether people with physical disabilities can use the website or the progressive web application. It is explicitly checked whether essential elements such as buttons or links are sufficiently described, or images and graphics have a “voice over” function, which also allows the blind to acquire the contents via voice instructions.

Best practice

As part of best practices, Lighthouse mainly analyzes the security aspects of websites or PWAs. The tool checks if encryption technologies such as TLS are used, if the resources embedded in the website come from secure sources, or if the JavaScript libraries are secure. Lighthouse also analyzes whether all attached databases are safe, indicating insecure commands or using outdated APIs.

SEO

Google Lighthouse uses various tests to analyze the findability of the app or website by various search engines. However, these Lighthouse tests are minimal. Lighthouse gives the results of the analysis on a scale of 0 to 100 points. If it doesn’t get the total score, the website manager should step in, as optimization is needed.

Lighthouse’s focus here is on search engine optimization in the field of mobile devices. It also analyzes the mobile compatibility of the website or progressive web application and checks if the tags and metadata are optimized.

How do you use Google Lighthouse?

For some years now, Google Lighthouse can be installed directly as a Chrome extension. In general, Lighthouse can be used in many different ways. However, they all have one thing in familiar: on every computer where Lighthouse is to be used, the Google Chrome browser must be installed.

The easiest way to use Lighthouse is through Google DevTools. Lighthouse is available here in the Audit tab. Another variation is the use of the already mentioned Chrome plug-in. The advantage of the Chrome variant of Lighthouse is that it always has the latest version of the tool available. Lighthouse users also have the command line available. The advantage here is that Build-Tools can also be used. To do this, you can download a node.

What can be seen with Lighthouse?

Google Lighthouse provides key user experience indices with information such as “First Contentful Paint” or “First Input Delay,” and it does it very simply. To analyze scenarios as accurately as possible, the tool simulates real-world conditions, especially on mobile devices, in the form of CPU performance adjustments and other factors that affect users in daily use.

After analysis, Lighthouse provides scores ranging from 0 to 100, with 100 being the best result. With these scores, you can orient yourself to eliminate potential errors or make optimizations. In the website load time performance analysis, the score results are divided into three categories. Scores from 0 to 49 (red color scale) indicate the site is slow, 50 to 89 (orange color scale) indicate acceptable speed, and 90 to 100 (green color scale) indicate fast sites.

These results allow you to make the necessary settings and optimizations, if necessary, to speed up the website’s loading times. This method of returning analytics results applies to all measurable events, including PWA performance, accessibility, best practices, and SEO.

Progressive website or web application operators can use Lighthouse tests to obtain information and analytics for optimization purposes. Thanks to the chromatic scales and the suggestions provided, even newbies can independently take the first steps towards optimization.

How to Learn SEO In 2021

Is it possible to learn SEO yourself? Several times I have been asked the following question by clients who wanted to approach Search Engine Optimization.

My answer is absolute, yes, and in this article, I will try to give you practical advice and useful resources to learn how to do SEO in full autonomy.

I want to tell you what, in my opinion, are the fundamental elements that characterized my training and that allowed me to become a successful SEO Specialist today: patience, perseverance, and experimentation.

Then come the technical skills and knowledge of the subject in its entirety. Without these three elements, I believe it is impossible to achieve good results and consider yourself SEO experts.

How to learn SEO

Learning SEO in 2021 means rolling up your sleeves and investing your time and resources in online and offline training. It means learning the basics of SEO, knowing the Quality Raters’ guidelines, and acquiring a mindset oriented towards continuous updating on the Google algorithm and its updates.

Having the humility to make mistakes, grow from the mistakes made, and deal with industry experts. Bcloud will now try to give you some practical advice and point out useful resources based on my studies and my professional training.

The study from Google sources

In my opinion, the documentation made available by Google is a very precious resource, complete but above all free to start learning SEO.

These are the Google guidelines to start with:

  1. The Getting Started Guide to Search Engine Optimization (SEO);
  2. An overview of Google Search Console reports and tools;
  3. The Webmaster Central Blog to stay updated on the news from Google and its search engine
  4. The guidelines adopted by Google’s Quality Raters for the qualitative evaluation of a website;
  5. Guidelines for images to be included in your web pages;
  6. The Google Webmaster Center YouTube channel;
  7. The answers to the questions FAQ section where about organic search that Google receives most often from webmasters are collected;
  8. A section dedicated to troubleshooting search results;

Diversify your Training

In addition to the reliable documentation made available by Google, it is possible to find valid free or paid resources online to deepen the study of SEO.

Among these I would like to recommend sector blogs such as:

  1. The moz.com blog;
  2. The SEO channel of searchengineland.com;
  3. The backlinko.com blog or its channel dedicated to SEO training;
  4. Neil Patel’s blog;
  5. Bruce Clay’s blog;

You can also participate in SEO workshops or, especially in this period, free webinars on search engine optimization and positioning on Google. Another very useful source of learning for learning SEO and on which I have spent a lot of time for a personal matter of practicality and interest, is that of reading books on SEO.

Find Your SEO Specialty

Besides having extensive training on the subject and achieving a 360-degree view of the world of Search Engine Optimization, I honestly recommend that you identify and focus your study on a specific SEO niche.

In my case, for example, also given my previous experience in web development, I decided to deepen the training on Technical SEO and turn it into a specialization.

Here are some examples of topics on which to go in-depth and make them become a possible specialization:

  • The Link Building;
  • SEO Copywriting;
  • The Web Performance;
  • Content Marketing;
  • Web Design and usability.

Talk to SEO Experts

Participate in SEO forums, communities, or Facebook groups. In these places, you will find experts to ask questions, ask for advice and explanations, and establish a professional comparison.

In addition to the three elements mentioned at the beginning of this article – patience, perseverance, and experimentation – I believe that comparing with other professionals has been an abundant element for my professional growth.

The Experiment in the Field

Among the fundamental elements for learning SEO, I mentioned experimentation.

Studying SEO also means trying, testing, making mistakes, and correcting. And then start over to learn something new every day.

Therefore register one or more domains. Open blogs or pilot projects to carry out all the tests necessary to experiment with SEO optimization techniques and positioning on Google. Don’t delay this step, and do it now!

Conclusion

In this article, I’ve tried to summarize the essential resources that helped me become a Search Engine Optimization expert. Resources are also my daily source of incremental SEO training and updating.

And you? What are or what were the sources and resources that allowed you to learn SEO? Feel free to leave a comment if you wish to add something useful to integrate this content.

Relevant SEO Factors in Domain Selection

SEO Factors in Domain Selection

Backlink profile, content quality, and usability are just three of the many SEO factors in domain selection in Google ranking, which decide which websites appear in the top search engine results. For any website, having a good ranking is a decisive element, as most customers come through the search engines. The winning business card for an Internet site is undoubtedly the right domain. Whether this should contain a company name, relevant keywords, or other word combinations, the site manager decides. The question of whether this choice affects Google ranking or not remains highly debated. We have collected and summarized for you everything you need to know about SEO domains.

Google Ranking Factors are not a Fixed Rule

When it comes to Google ranking factors in domain selection, you shouldn’t think of an instruction manual with a list of things to do or check. Over 200 different ranking factors contribute to the definition of the algorithm that establishes the order of the search results shown, some of which are known and have been confirmed by official pages, while others voluntarily kept secret. This way, Google wants to avoid possible manipulation of the search results. There are many rumors about SEO experts, and it is not difficult to come across interviews with Google employees, experiences, studies, and other clues. There are also several theses related to the ideal SEO domain name. What influence could the name, extension, and age of a domain have on the positioning?

Keywords in the Domain Name

A few years ago, assumed that domains containing relevant keywords had an advantage in positioning on Google. The right keywords in the domain name allowed users to create a direct reference between the search criterion and the website. It positively influenced the CTR (the click-through rate), favoring the site’s positioning. Starting with an algorithm update in 2012, Google first checks the relevance of the “exact domain match” and rewards sites only when they contain quality and relevant content. Therefore, the number of domains composed of keywords in the search results progressively decreases, and the function that these domains’ choice plays as a presumed ranking factor.

Domains with the Company Name

If you use your brand as a domain name, the user knows what to expect. If these expectations are met, lower bounce rates and longer dwell times are created, both of which are very important in SEO. The name of the brand used as a domain is not only relevant for SEO purposes but above all-important for the image: those who use a brand name that is easy to remember as the domain of their site, thus also reinforces the identity of the company (the so-called corporate identity).

Extension of the Domain

Many website operators wonder if the new domain extensions are relevant for SEO purposes. Over the past few years, new top-level domains (TLD, short for Top Level Domain) have been progressively added to expand the market for classic domain extensions, such as .com. According to official statements by Google, the new generic TLDs (.hotel, .shop) are considered the same as the most common ones (.com, .org). Equally irrelevant to a site’s ranking would be whether or not its TLD contains a keyword. An exception in the equal treatment is that of specific TLDs for each country: in Italy .it domain will be more relevant than a .de, which will rarely appear among our country’s first search results. According to Google, new regional domains such as .berlin or .london are evaluated as .com domains.

Regardless of Google’s official decisions, the experts rely on their own experience. Consequently, TLDs’ choice affects the click-through rate and indirectly on search engine rankings. In this way, for example, pages with the extension .info, in the search for information pages, get a higher click-through rate.

Domain Ownership and Age

The fact that you are holders of multiple domains also has a specific influence on the SEO field. Suppose the past domains on his name have been penalized or recognized as spam. The owner retains this “reputation” for subsequent domains as well. Experts, therefore, recommend making information on domains available to the public. If on the one hand, there is the possibility of protecting one’s private sphere for whois requests, on the other hand, this could generate a lack of trust. Playing face-up is by far the most advisable choice.

Another factor that can indirectly affect the SEO profile is the age of the domain. It’s easy to see how long a domain has been registered. Netcraft offers a tool that identifies when a crawler first identified a domain. Established domains that have long provided some quality, inspire trust, and are valued accordingly. However, this does not mean that a newly registered domain cannot earn a good ranking. Claiming that the older a domain, the better its ranking is incorrect. Indeed, it would be more correct to state that age can affect the quality score of a domain both positively and negatively.

Domains for Users, not Search Engines

Choosing the right domain is an essential step if you want to have a successful website. The domain name should be selected by reasoning from an SEO perspective and taking into account the users. Having a domain name that is short and easy to remember and having a specific thematic and easily recognizable relevance is essential. Understanding whether the brand name, a relevant keyword or a combination of the two is the right choice is determined both by business strategies and by the chosen domain’s availability with the desired TLD.

Optimization of your site for Google

The increased importance of the role of SEO over the past twenty years is a direct result of the changes in consumer shopping habits due to the Internet. The Google search engine processes around 2 trillion searches per year. The use of search engines has become an integral part of modern life, so much so that in the English Dictionary it is now possible to find the verb “to Google”. One of the most important differences between SEO and content marketing is purpose.

SEO is about getting as many relevant visitors to your site as possible, directed by unpaid search engine results. By “relevant” we mean those visitors who will be most likely to purchase and use your products and services. The best way to achieve this is to get top rankings for the phrases and words used by these customers on search engines. The first results, located at the top of the first page, will get the vast majority of clicks. For this reason, SEO has become a fundamental part of modern marketing.

SEO as a marketing channel

The goal of SEO is to bring customers to a site or company; for this reason we also call it a marketing channel. The purpose of any marketing channel is to function as a means of communicating with customers. Other well-known online digital marketing channels include:

  • Email marketing
  • Search Engine Advertising (SEA)
  • Display Advertising
  • Social Media Marketing (SMM)
  • Television advertising
  • Website
  • Native Advertising

It is important to note that SEO is the channel or medium, not the search engine. This is for two reasons: First, search engines play a crucial role in marketing through other channels, most notably Search Engine Marketing (SEM). Secondly, search engines may be where customers find a site, but it is search engine optimization (SEO) that causes a site to be found in organic results. If your site hasn’t been optimized properly, search engines like Google may not be able to find and list it in their results.

SEO: Content and Site Optimization

SEO is often about optimizing two areas: First, optimizing a site usually consists of improving its technical setup, for example by reducing loading times and image sizes, or by submitting a sitemap. In practice, we try to make sure that search engines can easily crawl and find the content of a site. Second, you need to think about SEO in terms of content optimization. You need to make sure that your content gets the highest possible ranking for the keywords your target audience is using. What the site owner wants to get from these clicks will depend on the specific SEO strategy.

For example, someone using the direct marketing strategy might be using an SEO content strategy, focusing on specific phrases and keywords that customers use when purchasing a product. The organic top-ranking (with better ranking) results for the term “buy flowers” (with no ads written by them) all lead to ecommerce sites that sell flowers. This is because the owners of these sites have optimized their content so that it appears in the results for the queries that people use to find and buy flowers online.

However, we usually use search engines for more than just buying products – we also use them to research and learn. The specific results we want our site to appear for depend on the marketing strategy we are using. As you will see, when doing content marketing, the keywords you use will be very different from those used for e-commerce.

Create Engagement with Content Marketing

When SEO aims to get clicks on organic results, the content marketing strategy focuses on building a relationship with customers, creating engagement with text content, videos, images and social media posts. When compared to a direct marketing strategy, content marketing goals are often less obvious and only indirectly achievable. The objectives could be to structure a brand / brand or to strengthen the authority of a website in specific areas related to its sector.

A great example of content marketing from the pre-Internet era is the Guinness Book of World Records. It originated as a promotional tool for the Guinness Beer company. The book was initially envisioned as a way to create interesting content to talk about when in the bar. The book played an important role in making the company a major international brand, leveraging consumer interests and fueling conversation, key elements of content marketing.

Modern Content Marketing with Brands and Brands

In the era of online marketing, digital content marketing has developed as a progression from the old television advertising methods of the pre-Internet era. Major brands that once advertised on television and through sponsorship can now purchase the rights to show these events directly. They can then turn this event coverage into content to share on their channels. Red Bull is a great example of a brand making the most of content marketing in the Internet age.

The company regularly creates compelling multimedia content on engaging topics – from e-sports coverage, to lectures and discussions with music legends including Iggy Pop and contemporary artists like ST. Vincent. Sharing this interesting content through their channels creates engagement and makes their brand even more captivating and interesting, leveraging the values and interests of a demographic that is fundamental to them: young people.

Creating compelling content that isn’t directly related to selling their products is also a great way to build an online or “following” following. When consumers subscribe to a brand’s social media channels, they create a valuable direct channel between consumers and the brand. This channel remains open only as long as the consumer is interested in the brand. This is one of the main reasons why content marketing has become so important. Customers will not remain subscribed for long to a corporate channel that consists solely of promoting a product.

Content marketing keeps consumers interested and engaged, in order to make them more receptive to any offers. Additionally, content marketing builds a relationship with customers and can create a long-lasting loyalty relationship with the brand.

Content Marketing for small Businesses

Many small businesses use content marketing as a tool to be found by customers. These companies don’t have the budget or the reputation to do content marketing at the big brand level. Instead, small businesses tend to do content marketing in a way that maximizes the power of the Internet as a discovery and research tool.

Consumers don’t just use the internet to find what they want to buy, they also use it to solve problems and find new topics and interesting content. Many content marketing strategies are built around this fundamental concept. You go on to design useful and interesting contents that refer to your own brand, but which are not directly sales oriented. Then they will go to place this content on the channels that will be visited by consumers, such as search engines, social media and YouTube. Customers who come across a brand that shares interesting and useful content tend to create a good first impression.

If the content is interesting and also well targeted, it will be almost inevitable to get a good amount of traffic. This is because it is very likely that those who appreciate the content then go to check the company’s products and services.

Many content marketing strategies also use people’s emotional dynamics and the tendency to share content with their friends. A practical example of this is “Will It Blend?” by Blendtec. Part of what makes their videos so popular is the ability to directly appeal to consumers by making them entertained and, at the same time, showing everyone the robustness of the company’s blenders. Millions of people have seen these videos and many have shared them with friends.

When content marketing is done well, it will ensure that the audience itself drastically extends your reach. This popular video series managed to blow up the company’s brand and brought them tons of sales. A significant percentage of the people who enjoyed those videos became customers.

The Similarities Between Content Marketing and SEO

SEO often goes hand in hand with content marketing. To find videos on Youtube we use the search bar and keywords. By using keyword-based SEO strategies or keywords, marketers are able to maximize the reach of these videos. Furthermore, this strategy allows you to find videos also on search engines. Youtube is in fact a property of Google and functions as a search engine for videos. The keyword tools used by digital marketers to find SEO keywords can also be used to find content marketing topics. Search engines are an important research and discovery tool made available to modern consumers. Today we use them to solve our daily problems.

Marketers can analyze keywords used on search engines, so they can find questions and problems that customers most frequently link to the products they are interested in. This will allow him to create content designed to solve these problems. This content could take the form of SEO-optimized informational or educational blogs, or keyword-optimized videos that will lead potential customers to the content owner’s site.

A great example of this is Laurastar’s informative YouTube tutorial on “How can I iron a shirt in 2 minutes?”. This video starts from the fact that about 1300 people in Italy use Google to search for “how to iron a shirt?” (based on data from the rankingCoach keyword research tool).

Laurastar has created a simple and captivating video tutorial that answers this question. The video has millions of views of people interested in improving their ironing technique. Some of these viewers will discover the brand and purchase some of the products linked to it and linked in the video description.

Conclusion: SEO vs Content Marketing

SEO and content marketing are sometimes confused because content marketing can use tools and techniques typical of SEO, especially when creating informative content for problem solving and proposed to customers through search engines. Modern online marketing professionals need to know and understand both terms. SEO is mainly about maximizing the number of clicks a site receives from search engine results.

The result is achieved by optimizing the website and its content. Instead, content marketing is a strategy that often uses more than one channel to be able to leverage the needs, interests and curiosity of consumers. It’s a vital tool for building a successful brand and online following. However, it is important to keep in mind that to maximize the chances of success online, content marketing and SEO should be used in parallel, so that they complement each other.
